Spring by the Ottawa River
By Jingrong Yang(Canada)
Translated by Mayflower (Canada)
1
The flying snow begins to evince a gentle voice
The cold jet streams are no longer outrageous
The nights are getting shorter as the Earth orbits
And the Sun of the early spring radiates its golden rays
Row by row, the snow geese are heading towards the North
Darting out the message of Spring
Covered with silvery snow, the Ottawa River suffers periodic shivers
Under the endless snow, the ice is melting before being noticed
2
Once more, I ski flying down the hill
Saluting with awe to the winter
I make a last fairy tale night of ice fishing
Inside a cabin in the middle of the lake with silvery light shining
In the soft flakes of white snow
Listening to the music of snow dance
A last winter melody
Following the sunset glow and the sunrise radiance
I drive towards the maple forest
Where there’s filled with the syrup of Spring
3
The wings of warm Spring
Fly across the banks of the River
Sending kisses to the cold forests
Like the love of Mother Nature
Gently awakening the hibernating creatures of the North
Spring buds open their eyes
Green sprouts stretch themselves in the rain
And woodpeckers digging their bills into the trees with drumming beats
The River has broken through the ice
The babies in Spring cheering to their best content
The joyful sound of the creek is a song sung by Spring
4
New flower buds light up a new round of hope
A new year to be carved in a new chapter of life
What brilliant Spring days
Flowers smile from grin to grin wearing each own unique skirt
Pink and crimson
Violet and lemon-yellow...
Magnolias and Cloves
Cherries and Begolias...
All as gorgeous as magical fairies
Flowery magnificence consorted in fragrance
Flows out to both of the river banks
5
The geese have returned with their children
And the fish still on their way
Open-minded and never-ending
The River is full of cozy harmony and lavish luminosity
In flood Spring flowers wave after wave
Where the birds sing with obsession
And the squirrels gaze with satisfaction
With the winds in dignity float the petals of tulips
Dropping with love into the valleys each petal of fragrance
For good parting the Ottawa River
Surging towards the faraway Pacific Ocean
Along with the river stream
6
Being a brother of the Sun
I leave behind the long devastating cold that’s wilful on its own
Enjoying the Spring-charmed River
Clock chiming from the ancient castle on the cliffs
Dots of white sails rising from the water surface
Then from the tip of the clouds out drifts a poem
Flitting elegantly in the splendid light mists
That carries me back to the time of my youth
When the songs of the birds crossing the rainbow
Dandelions open for it their tiny umbrellas one by one
7
Walking out of the night snow with cold jet streams
People along the River to whom Spring belongs
Will sing with toasts
To drive away Winter’s sorrows
Cheers! Mon Ami!
To the grandiose Ottawa River
Let Spring’s fragrance mingle with the scents of wine
Let hearts and minds expose themselves like fresh green grass
Let them bathe in the splendour of Spring
Let us be indulged in the winds
And toast together to its super splendidness
8
In this dreamy Spring
Let’s paddle a little boat and ripple in the breeze
Let’s make some tea with Spring water and produce a teapot of airy scents
Either the worldly meets and misses or the willow trees and lotus leaves
Just let Spring’s rain spray its fervent kisses onto the living
Let our souls dissolve into the tea
All the bygones, feelings, and emotions
The vicissitudes can’t be fully narrated within one drink
Flowers come and go
While clouds changing their shapes
Left only were the lonely shadow of a crane and the flying of silver seagulls
Let us just wait for another onset of good luck, and embrace Zen in Zhuang's butterfly dream
Oh, Spring of the Ottawa River, Time of the Floating Clouds
Spring, would you please slow down
