Huading Rhododendrons in the rain
Author/Tian Yuan (China)
English Translation/Zhong Quan (US)
Huading is the main peak of Tiantai Mountain, 1093 meters above sea level, where an area of primitive rhododendron forest grows. In early summer, the azaleas blooming all over the mountains are a great spectacle on the Mountain.
In order to see the famed Huading Rhododendrons, one rainy day in late Aprilour group took a bus and headed towards Huading Forest Park along a winding road. Huading Peak is not very high and the ancient trees on both sides of the highway are towering, and the scenery is very beautiful. Because of the drizzle, the surrounding area is covered with a hazy mist, and the distant peaks and mountains are totally hidden by grey fog, which sometimes gathers and disperses, and sometimes flows slowly. The bus seemed to be driving through the clouds.
There is a Huading Temple under the Huading Peak, which was built in the first year of Tianfu after the Five Dynasties (936). It is tall and majestic, just magnificent. On the right side of the temple is a statue of Wang Xizhi Mochi. According to legend, when Wang Xizhi was young, he lived here to learn calligraphy from Mr. Bai Yun. He kept practising calligraphy and washing the ink in the pond, which eventually dyed the clear water black. Later generations called it "Wang Xizhi's Ink Pond". A marble stone stele was erected by the pool, bearing the sign:” Mr. Baiyun Calligraphy" written by Wang Xizhi. Wang Xizhi's calligraphy is elegant, beautiful and powerful. I was deeply attracted to it, and I was reluctant to move for a long time.
We came quite early in the season, when the mountain hadn’t fully bloomed. Only the artificially cultivated azaleas at the entrance of the scenic area bloom enthusiastically in clusters of pink, peach, magenta, purple, pale pink, and rare golden colors - a beautiful colorful scene.
The rain got heavier as the winding mountain road twists and turns. There are several azalea trees of more than two meters high growing randomly along the road, and the huge flower buds are ready to be blossom.
A group of people walked and talked on the mountain path, and they were all a little depressed, regretting that it was not yet full blossoming time. Suddenly, my eyes lit up, asI beheld two rugged rhododendrons on the right side of the mountain road, already in full bloom! Also, hundreds of lavender flowers bloomed like small trumpets from the tall branches and lush green leaves. The crystal-clear raindrops hung on the petals, wishing to fall, winkling and twinkling, as if each petal had its own unique beauty. This is the rhododendron on Huading Peak! Rhododendrons with rain water are beautiful in the misty rain, beautiful in their loneliness, so fresh and graceful! I couldn't wait to get closer and closer to it, to appreciate its shocking beauty.
The legendary Rhododendron, Lucidum, is right in front of you and the flowers are all over the branches, coloured light pink or lavender, blooming proudly, or shyly budding, brightening the original green hills, creating an incomparable beauty. Although there are only a few rhododendrons blooming, in my heart it is already a sea of ??gorgeous flowers.
The rain continued to fall, and the wind cooled us down a little bit. Standing under the azalea tree, enjoying the flowers, feeling warm as if in the same mood as the azaleas. Sometimes I stopped and stared, and sometimes held up my phone to take pictures, for fear that the flowing clouds would once again cover the blooming flowers and the green leaves. The azaleas in front of me were in the thick mist, and the purple mist seemed to engulf us, giving us a kind of dreamy beauty. This solemn, hazy, and mysterious beauty not only lit up my eyes, for even my heart was unlocked, bringing so much beauty, and love into it. At this moment, I suddenly felt grateful for the rain. Without the rain and fog, it would have been difficult to see this spectacle that though not a fairyland, it is much better than one.
Huading Rhododendron is in the lonely high mountains. It has experienced hundreds of years of wind and frost, growing stubbornlyand endlessly. It is a magical flower with its own unique and brilliant beauty, full of toughness and indifference. Although not talland straight, and without a fragrant floral fragrance, how many people in the world are overwhelmed by its beauty? How many people admire its simple and tenacious quality?
The poet Bai Juyi of the Tang Dynasty once praised the rhododendron in this way: "Looking back, the peaches and plums are colorless - the hibiscus is not a flower". The Huading Rhododendron is tempered thousands of times by wind and frost, and it has collected the essence of sunlight and rain. It is a rare gift given to the world by the heavens, and it is worthy of the reputation of "flowers in Xishi".
