“Elder brother, father is critically ill, please come back soon.” That was the message left on his phone. Alas he returned too late from abroad so his father never saw him again. He looked at his father's face, which was so thin after the pain he had suffered. Tears rained down from the son’s face as he knelt down before his father's bed. He vigorously thumped the side of the bed, calling to his father, but to no avail as his dad was no longer hearing.
After taking care of the funeral, his sister held up a key and said: “Father's will is in here.” They opened the safe together to find a stainless steel box inside. He was stunned when he opened the box revealing ten medals of various sizes inside. His father was 94 years of age and had joined the army during the Anti-Japanese War. Later, he participated in the War of Liberation, in Resisting U.S. Aid to Korea, and in the border construction of the motherland making, many significant contributions. He had been a member of several elite.
His son had always felt that his father had been very frugal over his life, and would thus leave him a legacy, if not of lots of money, then many material artefacts. Was this it? Just medals. Under each one there was a small note: This is a third-class merit in the War of Resistance against Japan. This one is the second-class merit in the War of Liberation, and this is the third-class merit in the War of Resisting the United States and Aid to Korea... each one simply recording date and time of each battle.
Opening the envelope he opened the will and read aloud: ‘My children, your mother and I have gone through ups and downs for 70 years. We have supported each other and fought side by side all the way, and now we have reached the end of life. Death comes to all but life goes on. I have experienced a countless rain of bullets, and yet still lived already putting death aside. On the battlefield, I have seen on countless occasions our comrades in arms fall down in gunfire but have also lived forever in gunfire. Children, cherish today's happy life. I know that my time has nearly come. Your mother and I have discussed what should happen with our life savings and decided to pay it all into the party funds. Mom and Dad hope that you will always work hard, never forgetting your roots. Don't ‘sleep on your parents' workbook’, behave righteously, and don't lose yourself in the sinful. Love from your parents!
A few days later, according to his father’s will, his last wish was fulfilled.
Signed: People’s Merit _ an old party member.
