周捷，旅美杭州人，美國(guó)建筑設(shè)計(jì)師，長(zhǎng)期在美國(guó)和國(guó)內(nèi)從事建筑設(shè)計(jì)，喜愛(ài)音樂(lè)和詩(shī)歌，擅長(zhǎng)琵琶演奏，大紐約地區(qū)音樂(lè)家協(xié)會(huì)成員，百老匯名劇《M.Butterfly》音樂(lè)演奏
Zhou Jie, a native of Hangzhou, is Chinese American architect. He has been engaged in architectural design in the United States and China for a long time. He loves music and poetry and is good at playing pipa. He is a member of the Associated Musicians of Greater New York and worked as a musician for the famed Broadway musical Madama Butterly, which received the 1988 US Drama Tony Prize.

Street lights are lit as night falls.
The view outside my window
Is like a dream where a wanderer lolls.
This FDR Drive of tremendous fame
Presents scenes like Beijinger in New York,
Episode by episode and frame by frame.
Dubbed in the background theme song
Titled “Ten Million Questions,”
Life seems to be going on.
Life doesn’t have just ignoble existence,
But also music, poetry, and hope in the distance.
Where in the world is my distant hope?
Like meteors across the sky my thoughts lope.
As paradise is the best place up there,
On earth, Suzhou and Hangzhou excel.
Like a charming pearl extremely rare,
She shines bright in the east,
Always beckoning at me,
A wanderer on a North American thoroughfare.
Oh, Hangzhou,
Ranked among China’s Seven Ancient Capitals
Full of scenic beauty aglow,
Teaming with talented hopefuls.
She is the birthplace of Chinese culture;
And the hometown that in my dream doth anchor.
It’s a wondrous land of talents blessed
On the bank of the West Lake lying.
Its view is like a beauty in her best,
Its crystal-clear water rippling,
Against the White Dike lotuses nestling,
Along its banks, willow branches swaying,
O’er the jade-like Su Dike a rainbow hanging,
Like the six-arched bridges.
Peach blossoms bloom in spring;
Lotuses show burst open in summer;
Osmanthus emits fragrance in autumn;
Plums show off their beauty in winter.
The West Lake always has flowers to show,
With the four seasons that come and go.
It is a land of lives thriving forever.
Lying on the bank of the Qian River,
Which into the distance doth wind,
The Liuhe Pagoda leaving behind.
By the wind-brushed window,
I watch and hear the tide below.
Staring into the distance at the afterglow,
My thoughts surge like many a past hero.
Oh, the beauty of this land
Always seduces me into smiling
And waking me up from my dreamland,
Making me feel as if
My hope in the distance was ne’er faraway,
Because I won’t let her from my heart stray.
Message from the wanderer:
I wish my hometown Hangzhou I miss day and night
Long-lasting prosperity and peace without blight!

Haiwang Yuan is a professor emeritus from WKU and a guest professor at Nankai University’s CFL. A translator and Sinologist, he is a member of the Chinese Culture Translation and Studies Support and once served as an executive editor of China Encyclopedia Publishing House’s "About China" project (English version) and a translation consultant for the British ACA Publishing House, Yuan has authored and coauthored several English monographs and translated such renowned Chinese authors as Zhang Wei, Zhou Daxin, Su Tong, Xu Huaizhong, Zhao Benfu, Li Di, Zhao Qingyun, and Li Ying.
