Ode to Libraries
By Jia Jintao (China)
Tr.by Liao Shijing(Sydney)
If there is a paradise in the world,
It must be like a library in all aspects,
Just for people to encounter and engage with books.
In the libraries,
All languages are silent and serene .
All the outflows are static and still.
Human nature and soul’ve been
compiled and bound,
In the form of the immortal light,
Into books full of words and symbols
well lined.
Between the pages you can smell the
fantastic fragrance of ink.
Unpredictably they may one day
suddenly revive,
Rushing out of silence and out of
libraries
Running into people's thoughts deep into their soul.
In the libraries seemingly run the rivers of human nature big and small.
In the libraries there's no imprisonment.
Dreams in the heart, wild imagination of
the future,
Creation, invention, magics, are
wandering in the books all together.
Human beings have used books,
To build the magnificent bridges,
Over the oceans of mysterious years.
Right here in the libraries,
We can meet great men and saints.
We can see their wisdom light up bright with no faints.
Upon entering the libraries,
We are standing at the intersection of
thousands of roads.
Some roads lead to the other end of the
ideal.
Some roads lead to the pinnacles of hopes.
Some stretch to the deep bottom of the heart.
No matter which way you run,
Knowledge will navigate for you with fun.
Even if you spend your whole life in the
libraries,
You may not be able to run out of them.
Such little places may mean the whole
world to you.
They have held the historical past,
and they also have the future as in a
futuristic mind.
The human voices flood into the libraries from rivers, mountains and seas.
Such voices echo along the historical
brinks over hundreds of millions of years.
Yes, here you can hear the songs of the
first beams of light.
You can still see the trajectory of
dinosaurs crawling around.
Also you may hear the sparkling sounds of wood while our ancestors were drilling wood for fire.
……
The first great man who discovered Heaven
Said to those who focused on the surroundings:
"You are all sons of Heaven, and you live in Wonderland like Imperial Garden."
His loud voice has been turned into all kinds of words,
Down over tens and thousands of years,
Still resounding and reverberating in the libraries.
As if you are hearing a tsunami in a conch.
For hundreds and thousands of years and even for millions of years,
As long as we're in the libraries,
I'm sure we can hear the beats of the human pulses.
Reading in the libraries is like reflecting on the soul.
Every time we get absorbed into a book,
It's kind of an obsessive and devout enchantment.
So many noble souls have come and leave leisurely from distant time and space.
Our hearts are trembling because of this.
And also , becoming more enriched and more delicate as a result.
Cultivating in the libraries,
It's kind of spiritual creation.
It's sort of baptism of the holy soul.
It helps connect the great thoughts over thousands of years,
It also extends your vision to thousands of miles.
Let’s cultivate and plough the boundless fields during our lifetime.
So that our hearts are still free from erosion in the troublesome world.
So that the self-cultivation and extradition are getting deeper and deeper through reading.
Just like spring rain for the spring flowers ,
Just like the smooth irrigation of rivers to the farmlands,
Just like the morning dews to the trees.
The sanctity of the libraries
Is the greatest and real reason why we're
So infatuated, crazy and obsessed with them.
It is the grand temple for the soul purification and sublimation.
The fabulous faces of the libraries are splendid smiles from the world.
