Ode to the Great Wall
By LI Hongmei(China)
Tr. WEI Hongxia (China)
Ten thousand miles the Great Wall, awe-inspiring to all,Bathed in the sunshine and moonlight, it steps on the top of towering mountains, tramples over moats and natural barriers, and lies in wind gaps and clouds. Moving unhindered between heaven and earth,it gallops from the past to the present. It thrills the Divine Land and astonishes the world.
Thousands of ridges are united as one, which resembles a hovering dragon with many twists and turns. Guarding Liaoning Province in its east and Shaanxi-Gansu area inits west, the Great Wall has eight hundred passes among thousands of mountains, particularly, Jiayu Pass and Huangya Pass are two of the most crucial ones. Four of its eleven sections are Jiumenkou, Jiankou, Simatai, and Mutianyu. Of the top 4, Juyong Pass is surrounded by green mountains, and Dajingmen guards the gate of the capital. Among the ancient top 9 fortresses, Yanmen Pass was given the first priority. The first pass, Shanhai Pass, lies where the Great Wall enters the sea,so lofty and mighty is it, a shock to empyrean.
Great and impressive, China is a civilization of five thousand years. Dynasties have changed and battles have broken out. As a natural barrier, the Great Wall has accomplished immortal feats, first built in the Western Zhou Dynasty, whose twelfth king had beacon fires set to make fun of his dukes. Under the rule of its 26th king, the Qin state attacked Yiqu Kingdom. The 6th king of the state of Zhao expanded its boundary to YinshanMountains. During the Period of Warring States, seven states fought for the Central Plains. As the Qin state annexed the other six ones and unified the whole country, the Great Wall was rebuilt. The Han emperors drove Huns out of Central Plains and protected the Silk Road. The Sui Emperors had it rebuilt seven times, linking their borders in the northwest. The Great Wall spread to eastern Heishui region in Tang Dynasty and western Guyuan region in Song Dynasty. Ming Dynasty constructed the Great Wall once more as a military defense, including three most important passes: Shanhai, Juyong, and Jiayu. Qing Dynasty had the Great Wall erected in the north of the Yellow River and had the Liutiaobian region partitioned.
The long history of the Great Wall is drowned in the continuous beating of war drums. Holding shining spears and riding armored horses, valiant generals and their soldiers galloped across mighty rivers and lofty mountains. Warrior Meng Tian overawed Huns in Qin Dynasty; generals of Han dynasties in Longcheng won victory seven times. Ambitious, they wielded their swords, their war flags standing for their military prestige; they fought many bloodbaths bravely, defending their lands loyally. Alack! The years of China in chaotic state has gone by, yet the spirit of these heroes shall remain immortal, just as pine and cypress trees that shall remain evergreen.
There are flames of war for more than two thousand years and millions of people devoted their lives to building the Great Wall. The erection of the wall is the reflection of Chinese people's courage, every stone soaked in sweat and blood. Engraved on it are kings' foresight and common people's sorrow near at hand. Parted wives to guard the frontier afar, men is beset with barriers and freezing water.Hungry and thirsty, feed on frost and snow. Setting out before dawn while coming back after dark, the valiant men sacrificed themselves for the great project, with their lives and their bodies buried near under the foundation of the Great Wall. Legend has it that Meng Jiangnv, a wall-builder’s beloved wife, wept over the Great Wall for so long that the earth shook, mountains toppled down, grass and trees whimpered, birds twittered, wind whistled, clouds changed, sun and moon became dimmed. What they have suffered in the past paved the way for the glorious future for their descendants.
Since ancient times, poets composed verses, ditties, odes and songs to unbosom their feelings or worries concerning the remote frontier. Li Bai expressed his worry in The Moon over the Frontier Mountains "From thousands of miles away, blow gales to Yumen Pass all day". Wang Changling wrote a poem to pray for his country "The moon and the passes are the same as before, but the men going out to battle never returned". What they wished for was conveyed through their lines.
With a vast territory of more than 9.6 million kilometers, the traditional Chinese paintings are endowed with well-known mountains and rivers and Jiangnan area with beautiful scenes are all nature's creations, which inspire numerous poets to sing of them. A unique artificial wonder in the universe, the Great Wall is the quintessence of the wisdom of generations of Chinese descendants for thousands of years. Since it was constructed, it has weathered through the ordeal of wind and storm , gone through many vicissitudes and finally merged into nature. Linking thousands of mountains, it is the range of thousands of mountains. Having climbed to the top of the Great Wall a few times, I still felt an upsurge of emotion. Stroking its stones and blue bricks, I somehow shed tears. How can I describe its grandness and sacredness? What a pity! The unification of the Chinese nation is such a long journey. The flames and smoke of war have gone into the annals of history and the present peace has been brought by everyone.Industrious, intelligent, and courageous, we're the heirs of the Chinese dragon. With those national geniuses, the Chinese nation is vigorous in action and a bright future to come.
