沒有雷電
沒有疾風
悄無聲息
樹葉，沙沙
小草，瀝瀝
棚窗，滴滴
雨里？夢里？
是潤物無聲的喜雨？
是沙湖道中的急雨？
是敲打荷心的萬點雨？
還是漲滿秋池的夜雨，
亦或是孤篷釣晚江的寒雨？
都似，卻又不似！
一陣陣細瀝，
一陣陣急疾。
一場雨，只是一場雨。
一場溽濕高溫后的雨，
送來的清涼也不稀奇！
可我還是抑制不住思緒
是麥收滿倉
夏播后土地渴望的雨？
還是酷熱難耐后
干草、枝干吮吸的雨？
畢業(yè)季里
年輕人已身著士衣，
典禮后
他們中的一部分就要去化做春雨！
雨，只是一場雨，
一場普通的夏雨
可它還是把我許多許多的記憶喚起！
滿滿的，凌亂的，持續(xù)不斷的
記憶，回憶，追憶
伴著，這場悄無聲息的夜雨
回望，數(shù)不清，憶不盡
不知經(jīng)歷了多少雨
喜雨、冷雨、急雨、暴雨……
一切的一切，一切的一切……
一蓑煙雨！

On June 21, 2022, it was the summer solstice yesterday, with a high temperature. A summer rain tonight cooled me off a little.
No lightning,
No wind blowing,
No sound stirring.
The leaves are rustling
The grass is swishing
The shed’s window is pitter-pattering.
Is it raining? Or am I dreaming?
Is it the silent rain that moistens everything?
Is it the torrential rain on the Shahu Road pouring?
Are they the raindrops the lotus flowers beating?
Or the night rain the autumn pond filling?
Or is it the rain a lonely angler on his boat chilling?
Yes, it is, but no, it isn’t!
Sometimes, it’s drizzling,
Sometimes, it’s downpouring.
It’s rain, nothing but rain patchy.
The rain after a heat wave is sultry.
The coolness it brings is nothing unusual
But I’m still as reflective as I can be.
Is the rain for which the fields feel thirsty
After sowing and storing wheat in the granary?
Or the rain sucked by grass and stalks dry
In the unbearable summer heat high?
In the graduation season,
Youngsters are dressed in their gowns.
After the convocation,
Some will go and become spring rain!
It’s rain, nothing but rain,
An ordinary summer rain.
But it brings back many a memory!
Which are full, continuous, and messy.
Remembering, recalling, recollecting,
Accompanied by this silent rain in the evening.
In retrospect, there’s too much to be remembered.
I don’t know how much rain I’ve encountered:
Happy rain, cold rain, heavy rain, torrential rain...
Everything, everything, everything is...

Haiwang Yuan is an American writer, translator, and sinologist. He is an Emeritus Professor of WKU and a Guest Professor of Foreign Languages College, Nankai University. He has authored a dozen English monographs, including This is China: the First 5000 Years, Learning Chinese Through Classic Chinese, and Chinese Folktale series. He has translated such famous Chinese writers as Zhang Wei, Su Tong, Zhao Benfu, Xu Huaizhong, and Zhou Daxin.
