SONG OF WHITE SNOW
SENDING KHROM WU BACK TO THE CAPITAL
By CEN Sen (Tang Dynasty)
Tr.JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
The white grass is broken when the north wind doth blow;
Even in August the Tartar sky's full of snow.
As if the spring wind came suddenly overnight,
Thousands and myriads of pear trees should blossom white.
Flakes enter pearled blinds and wet silk drapes herein;
The furs of fox are not warm and brocade quilts thin.
The general can't free draw his rigid bow fair;
Th' commander's hard to wear his frozen armor wear.
The boundless desert is filled with the crisscrossed ice
There hang vast clouds sad and drear, that's not very nice.
In tent's the feast for th' guest back to capital bound.;
In the camps Tartar lutes, flutes and pipes well resound.
At dusk the heavy snow falls fast on the camp gate;
In the wind the frozen red flags won't undulate.
At the east gate of Luntai we see thee away;
When you are gone the snow fills the Mount Tianshan's way.
We can't find thee on th' twisted hill road up and low;
Only thy horse hoof prints can we see in the snow.

Calling on LU Hongjian and Having Not Met Him
By Monk Jiaoran (Tang Dynasty)
Tr.JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
He moved his home far away from the town;
Thro mulberries the wild path leads me down
Near th' fence are chrysanthemum of a lot;
When autumn comes, in full bloom they are not.
I knock at his door, but there is no bark;
I ask his west neighbour 'bout his foot mark.
The neighbor says he has gone to deep hill,
And everyday he often goes back at dark.

ORGY (The Book of Songs)
By Anonymous
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
King Wen opened his mouth with a long sigh;
Sighing thee the Shang Dynasty last King.
Like cicada's chirp Folks are sad to sigh,
And just like falling into th' soup boiling;
All the things big and small are not good more
Howe'er, thou art still the same as before
How furious folks of the whole country are!
The anger has spread far away so far.

To the Tune of Feng Ru Song.
Listening to the wind and rain I spend Qingming
By WU Wenying (Song Dynasty)
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Listening to the wind and rain I spend Qingming;
Sad I draft th' motto for blooms burying.
The gateway where we parted's full of green willows;
A twig of the willows,
Is an inch of loving.
I am already drunken in the chilly spring,
Being woken up at dawn when the warblers sing.
Bowers in West Garden I've been daily sweeping;
Sunny after rain I'm still enjoying.
On the ropes of the swing the bees often alight;
For that time on the site,
The scent thy fine fingers did bring.
Sans thee in manderin shoes I'm not in delight;
On steps overnight mosses came into being.

To the Tune of Yang Chun Qu. Spring Sight
By HU Zhiyu (Yuan Dynasty)
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Some red-snow-like apricot sprays bloom on the wall;
Distant green hills look like a screen on the house tall.
How many clear and bright days in spring overall?
The March outlooks of all,
Are for tipsy guys 'nd not for sober ones at all.
Bees brew withered flowers into the honey sweet,
The drizzle makes the soft spring mud for swallows neat.
I am awake late at winndow neath green shade on the seat.
Who woke thee up from seat?
I am awake by the outside dawn warblers' tweet.
Just like the red rain the withered peach petals fall,
Agee are ten- mile- long shades of willows tall.
Folks to Luoyang to watch flowers've homed overall.
Gone are the spring scenes all;
Idle, bees and butterflies do nothing at all.
