Even If Only for Five Seconds
Leanne Li / Hua Li
I can’t quite explain what this feeling is—
Only that the moment you appeared,
The world suddenly bloomed with roses:
In the mountains, along the rivers,
Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Mya’s Walk,
Across the vast lands of the South and North,
Even where the sun rises.
As if time itself remembered
It had once bowed before someone—
One whose steps were light,
Yet carried the weight of the skies.
Even if only for five seconds,
To bathe in your smile—
Would be enough for waves to ripple
Across the lake of my heart, stirring a sky full of stars.
You traverse half the globe,
Whispering gently like a saxophone playing Going Home.
All I want is to spend my whole youth listening.
You don’t need praise, nor requests,
Yet you illuminate the dreams I never voiced.
You—like thunder behind the clouds—resound,
Strong yet tender,
Like the one in my dreams gathering starlight.
Your whisper, like an old phonograph,
While I nap in a BMW
With sunbeams outside the window,
Reflected warmth from your own.
I care, I care about you,
I care about the fire in your eyes
When you see me—
Eyes full of unspoken longing and hope.
If I could strip away every flaw,
And leave only brilliance,
It wouldn’t be for perfection,
But just so I might become the scenery
You’d never miss as you pass by.
Maybe I’m too soft, but even softness can uphold the universe.
A gentle voice can still summon light.
Even if only for five seconds, I’d stand beside you,
Even if just silently,
Outside the moon you soar across,
In the wind stirred by your cape,
In the air your arms brush as they reach for the clouds.
You are the stillness before the starlight at dusk,
The sigh that won’t wake me from my dreams,
The reason I still look up at the sky.
Even if only for five seconds, you’re still here,
Then I can still believe—
That all the tenderness left unspoken,
Like your pink tie, white shirt,
And that cobalt-blue suit I loved,
Will return in some other form.
Like that night at Myra’s Walk,
Your regal presence
Lit up the towering buildings of Canary Wharf.
Ah—
Even if only for five seconds,
I want to see your return.

(Leanne Li / Hua Li)
