The Moon Folded in Two
Tonight, the Mid-Autumn moon
Hangs again over the Strait,
One half gleaming on the mainland's rice
waves,
One half reflected in Taiwan's fishing harbors,
Like a silver coin folded by the sea wind—
One side engraved with the tide of the
Yangtze,
The other stamped with the starlight of
Alishan.
Mother says
This moon was once round,
But that year, the wind was too fierce,
And snapped the tether of longing,
Leaving one half awake on the mainland's
window lattice,
The other half cooling on Taiwan's pillow.
In three generations' dreams,
Lingers the yearning to piece it together.
See the gulls returning to nest—
They always know the old harbor.
Listen to the rising tide—
Its voice always turns toward home.
The folded moon will smooth itself in time,
As a scattered family register will be rejoined.
When the lights of both shores merge into
one river of stars,
We'll raise our glasses and say—
This is the truest roundness of Mid-Autumn.
