Before the Stars Go Out
By Li Baiyue (Anhui)
Translated by Meng Chaogang (Hebei)
In the slowly dimming light of time,
Panic has long been worn away.
Calm and composure
Have climbed upon every face—
Even those of children's.
Climb to the high place,
Take one Last look at our vast rivers and mountains.
Walk into the fields,
Take one last look upon the crops and fragrant grasses.
Lift the phone,
Dial again the one you can't let go.
The songs can never be finished,
The wine will never be fully drunk.
We won’t live to see the final move in chess,
Nor read the closing line of a story.
Boundless darkness
Is rushing toward us now.
Put on your favorite clothes,
Sit quietly, and wait for the end.
White Dew
By Rongzhi Ruosi (Liaoning)
Tr. Huan Shi (Liaoning)
Once, that boy—
a flare of frenzy and the fever of youth.
Years honed him on the whetstone of days;
he learned the quiet art of ripening,
and wanders now, alone.
Through the clangor of memory,
he drifts past mountains and rivers
turned bleak;
maples lift torches of scarlet,
lighting the longing that visits his dreams
across the hollow of distance.
A crescent moon slips to his brow;
at his throat a necklace of frost,
set with one burning leaf.
Under the moon,
a single tear gleams—
a small, bright star.
