That Is That
LEANNE LI/ HUA LI
I will cross the whole world just to find you,
even if only for a fleeting moment.
If I cannot see that singular shade of blue in your eyes,
how could I ever drift into sleep?
Though the London Eye keeps spinning without pause,
I would still linger beneath the night sky,
like Van Gogh’s Starry Night,
searching within its silent swirls
for the light that belongs to you.
I will climb mountains and ford rivers to draw near,
like elephants in Tanzania
splashing together in the river at dusk,
even if your glance is cold as Alpine snow,
even if you are no more than a passing silhouette.
Even if your words fall sharp as blades
and leave their trace upon my skin,
still, I would return in dreams
to read them once more,
for every echo you leave behind
is the rhythm of my being.
I will walk through the tunnel of time to reach you,
though countless exclamations
strike like arrows to my chest.
If the whisper is yours,
I will carve it into the stone of my soul.
Like Curie drawing light from the flame,
like Galileo lifting his gaze to the stars,
I would release all the warmth within me
in an unguarded instant,
so that you may know—
the vastness of the world
can also be tender.
I will cross the universe itself to seek you,
though planets rise like barriers,
yet dawn always follows the night,
and roses bloom in the hush of morning.
When the Seine shimmers with mist at daybreak,
when Florence’s dome glows with the first fire of the sun,
when Prague’s bells echo in the twilight,
I will dance in a white dress,
so your gaze may meet mine once again.
That gaze, a flame,
ignites the landscape of my world,
as Newton’s falling apple
once sparked the fire of truth.
And then, you shall be the lighthouse.
Though cliffs of ice may tower,
the voyage will flow like music,
like a saxophone pouring its golden hymn,
like Raphael’s canvas lit with living light.
And my world will be
as sweet as honey,
as boundless as the African plain
where elephants charge unafraid—
joyful, unbroken,
ever moving toward the sun.
