The Log Cabin
By Yi Hua
She built this log cabin
so that it could
regain the wild nature of a prairie wolf.
Since then, the Zoigê Grassland
has hidden a story
of a mother and her child,
parted as if by a sharp blade.
She hunted alongside it,
letting the grass blades absorb the wolf’s breath.
In the dead of night,
they howled into the wilderness
like a raging hurricane.
Let the moonlight illuminate
two iron-tempered fangs.
Seasons changed, years went by.
Finally, on a golden dusk,
the call of the wolf pack came from the highland.
It looked back step by step, whining and begging.
She turned her back firmly,
her tears frozen into
the cold stars of the night sky.
From then on, the lonely grassland
has been guarding
a holy little log cabin.
