The Wolf King Is Gone
By Yi Hua
The wolf king is gone.
Across the grassland,
the little wooden cabin
that once bred fairy tales
holds nothing but memories of the wind.
But Green is still alive.
He is bringing the life-saving horse to Mother.
The moment he leaves her,
bright tears well up in his eyes,
pure and instinctive.
He stands on a hillside far from her,
howling again and again,
stitching up the grassland’s wounds.
Years cannot break death’s spell.
Beneath the cabin’s eave,
the wolf king has died.
His soul wanders like the wind.
The grassland wind stings my eyes.
Yet deep in my pupils,
the wolf carrying the red sash
comes galloping toward me.
His name is Green.
